Atmega programming (good read)

Good Read on Atmega

I got this from another site....

How to program atmegas

Instructions:

1) Simple, unzip your pgf into Jeepers directory and open up the
contained JeepersDX.

2) For Program select the pgf name you just unziped in the directory

3) For Network select:
* Dish if Dishnetworks is provider
* Both if Dishnetworks and ExpressVu used off same Receiver, or for
Dishplayer Receivers
* Express Vu if Express Vu is provider

4) Board selections have been modified for the obvious, as
only certain crystals work with certain receivers.

Note: You must be using crystal noted to use with specific IRD.

So here's there usage:

ATmega : Can be used on all Receivers with jumper left on while in IRD
13.500MHz-x000-x500IRDs : 13.5 is perfect crystal for and x000 and x500
18.000Mhz : Used with x700, x800, x900, 3100, 5100 and 501 Receivers
18.000Mhz-DP301 : Used with DP301 Receivers
18.4320MHz : Used with x700, x800, x900, 3100, 5100 and 501 Receivers
18.4320MHz-DP301 : Used with DP301 Receivers
18.4320MHz-6000IRD : 18.432 is perfect crystal for the 6000 Receivers.
20.0000MHz : Used with x700, x800, x900, 3100, 5100 and 501 Receivers
20.0000MHz-DP301 : Used with DP301 Receivers

5) Advanced settings, you can customize these but is suggested you leave them
as they are by default.

6) Keys, click get, make sure that your key getter has a valid link.

7) For IRD#, enter your Receiver number and leave last 2 digits after hyphen like this ?-00?.

8) For CAM ID, enter your Smart Card number or leave as default.

9) For Box Key, enter your Receivers unique Boxkey number. BoxKeys are in HEX, so the contain digits from 0(zero) to 9 and from A to F.

10) For TimeZone, set to your local TimeZone.
* Remember it is daylights savings time and you must reflect this in,
setting your timezone.

11) For ZipCode, best leave it as default.

12) Programming mode:
* If 2 pin jumper, make sure it is on the ATMEGA board.
* If switch, make sure it is away from ATmega128 chip.
* if 3 pin jumper, make sure is is on the PROG setting.

13) Insert ATMEGA all way into programmer, with contacts facing the
PCB board of the programmer.

14) Verify programmer is connected to computers printer port with cable
or gender changer.

15) Press Full Monty

16) Receiver mode:
* If 2 pin jumper, make sure it is off the ATMEGA board.
* If switch, make sure it is toward from ATmega128 chip.
* if 3 pin jumper, make sure it is on the PLAY or IRD setting.

17) Insert ATmega into Receiver and wait on a Black screen for 1-5 minutes for the
keys to roll the first time and enjoy TV.

TROUBLE-SHOOTING

1. "Failed to Enter program mode" Message from JeepersDx210
1. ATMEGA128 Connection:
1.1 Verify the card is inserted into programmer correctly.
1.2 Insert the ATMEGA128 with a Smart Card or business cards in programmer.
1.3 Verify ATMEGA is rectangular, no external bits attached to board.

2. Voltage Problem:
2.1 Try using a gender changer instead of a cable for the programmer.
2.2 Try using a different computer ( no Compaq's, Dell's, HPs these are
known to cause problems ). If works create a external power supply
for programmer.

3. Incorrect Jumper (Black ATMEGA) Setting:
3.1 For Black ATMEGA program with Jumper ON or to PROG.

4. ATMEGA Programmed at inproper crystal frequency. This is bad as it may render
the ATMEGA128 chip useless until unlocked.
4.1 Verify the crystal frequency by looking at the silver item on the ATMEGA
board and verify that are your using the correct board type
( ie; ATmega128@##.####MHz).
4.2 See 5.1

5. ATMEGA128 Locked
5.1 Start JeepersDx and select ATMEL -> ATmega128 Erase Flash/EEPROM, do this 3 times then program at proper board frequency of crystal. If no go, look into 1.2 more.
Please note: This requires a known computer that can write and ATMEGA board.

2. "Smart Card not inserted Correctly Message" when ATMEGA in receiver.
1. Incorrect Programming:
1.1 Verify you set Board type as ATmega128@18.0000MHz for Black ATMEGA or the XTAL frequency specified on XTAL

2. Jumper or Switch in Wrong Position:
2.1 Make sure jumper is off or to PLAY on Black ATMEGA while in Receiver.

3. Capacitors Blown:
3.1 Remove C1 and C2 from Blue ATMEGA board or remove both brown( capacitors) items on back of black ATMEGA, reprogram and see if works.

3. Preview Channels Only, All others Black Screen.
1. Initial Wait for video:
1.1 Can take from 20 seconds to 2 minutes for initial video to appear upon
power on of receiver.

2. Wrong Keys
2.1 Verify Key0 and Key1 are correct.
2.2 Verify proper boxkeys and IRD # are being used.

3. Static
3.1 Program ATMEGA as normal, then insert in IRD for 5 minutes trying to watch a
black channel. Then connect ATMEGA back to computer, and Hit Actions -> Verify
EEPROM, then Actions -> Verify Program.

3.1.1 If errors:
Reprogram ATMEGA, unplug power from IRD and sattelite feed, insert ATMEGA, wait 1 minute, then plug in power and sattelite feed.
3.1.2 If no errors:
Reprogram ATMEGA, select ATMEL -> ATmega128 and Lock/Fuse Settings, select yes to continue, remove check mark from M103C in Fuse Extended section, then
remove jumper(black ATMEGA) or put to PLAY, then hit write.

4. Bad ATMEGA128 chip
4.1 Program ATMEGA as normal, and Hit Actions -> Verify EEPROM, then Actions -> Verify Program. If error and you have tried on many different computers, most likely
bad chip. Also try Junior Roba which you can download from any forum and read the readme file that comes with it.

5. Picture will freeze in few min to few hours.
1. Wrong Lock/Fuse bit.
1.1 Up/down channel will work again.
1.2 *** Don't fool with other setting, do this at your own risk***
Remove jumper from Black ATMEGA or put to PLAY. After program ATMEGA as normal, select ->Atmel,->Atmeg128-> lock/fuse
settings. Click on "CKOPT" to de-select. Click on write
2. Incorrect crystal used on ATMEGA.
2.1 Verify you are using either a 18mhz or 18.43mhz crystal on ATMEGA.
3. ATMEGA programmed at board type ATMEGA128 only.
3.1 Program at proper crystal frequency and verify Jumper(Black ATMEGA) is off or to PLAY.
4. Software catching up
4.1 Blackouts occur when the stream is out of whack with the software and the
software needs to catch up with the proper sequence of stream, usually can take
up to 45 seconds.

6. Video for few minutes/hours/day then black screen.
1. Programmed at incorrect crystal frequency:
1.1 Program at proper crystal speed ( see 2.1.1 )

2. Keys change:
2.1 Program ATMEGA with new keys: Connect ATMEGA to computer, start JeepersDX, hit
get under keys section, then hit write. Insert ATMEGA back into receiver.

7. "Blacked out in the area" message while trying to watch a channel.
1. Wrong blackout string
1.1 Use default blackout string of "00 00 B4 7F 7F 7F 7F 7F 7F 7F 7F 7F 7F 7F 7F".

2. Channel guide:
2.1 Do not use channel guide to get into channel, type in channel # directly, if still
same message press channel up then channel down.

8. Channels Missing in guide.
1. Wrong teirs:
1.1 Use default tier settings from JeepersDX.

........................................................................................................

Unlock your ATMEGA

*So as always USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK*

ok, do this..

1) go to atmel tab erase eeprom/flash. While erasing it
remove jumper from atmega128.
it will say erased complete.
do this 3 times or more.
2) now put the jumper back and do full monty.
you will see at the bottom of the screen building then soon its says erasing pull the jumper it will erase then it will say
writting then put the jumper back that will write 1/4 or half
do this step 2 or 3 times.
3) when you do this step last time this time remove jumper when erasing put it right away its called on/off method in my opinion.
this time it wont erase complet instead you will see writting
that will do the job and you are done!!!!

Or try this;

1. Load up jeepers, and plug everything in for your atmega as normal (ie atmega in programmer, plug cable into compurer)
2. make sure jumper is ON
3. click the atmel tab, ATmega128, erase/flash eeprom
4. when it says erasing eeprom, PULL THE JUMPER
5. Do this 3 or more times
6. then do full monty, when it says erasing eeprom, PULL THE JUMPER, and when it says writing, PUT THE JUMPER BACK ON
7. You will get errors, go back and repeat steps 3 to 6. You will notice that each time you do the full monty, you will write a little more to the card before you get an error.
8. eventually you will write the card, and you will be able to erase the eeprom WITHOUT PULLING THE JUMPER
9. your atmega is fixed. Always program at the correct frequency (18mhz for efa, 18.43 for blue card with switch):
