Guide for WORKING Channel List with EPG on Ultra

Guide for WORKING Channel List with EPG on Ultra

Channel lists AND GUIDE does work for Ultra and this guide will show you how.

I've used a channel list for around 2 years now on Viewsats. There are a number of reasons I do even though Viewsats have very good scanning capabilities, these include:

- Edit channel names to location (city) or actual channel names
- Ease of deleting channels I don't want (foriegn language etc.)
- Sort the list into logical groupings (easier than favorites or themes)
- Speed of uploading to more than 1 receiver, that may include different channels (ex. no porn for kids)
- no need to scan "at gametime" for channels such as CenterIce

This example uses the same steps no matter what birds you use and assumes you have a working knowledge of Channel Master (CM) and Ultra setup - guide would be too long if explaining CM also. You can also use this same channel list for Platnum or Xtreme.

This also uses the null modem cable for reading/writing to the receiver - you could test with USB (but this example DOES NOT save to seperate sat and channel files - direct load from Channel Master.)

1/ First you need a channel list for all the birds you use. You can download various lists in the files section for each bird - and they can be seperate lists if you like, you can combine them later. Try to get lists that have ALL channels and already edited names - saves a lot of time. If you already have a list, add back any channels that you've deleted in the past - you can copy them from a downloaded list (or scan and download back to PC).

2/ Using CM edit the channel names as you please - I like to add an "S" in front of sports channels, "M" in front of movie channels, "A" for US network channels, etc for easy alphabetical sorting later as well as Cities for network channels. Don't worry about NIDs and TIDs, Viewsat won't take them. You can "bulk modify" names - ex. add an "S" in front of all sports channels by highlighting the channels you want to change, right ckick and hit "rename channels". In the format box type S <Name> Check out CM commands and there are a lot of shortcuts like this. Select multiple channels by using Shift or CTRL.
NOTE: you don't have to add the letters in front - this is just my own preference - name them as you want.

3/ Rename all channels you Don't want to "z" - This will make it very easy to delete all unwanted channels later (and is also the reason you need to have unwanted channels in your list)

4/ Assuming your Ultra is already set up and working you need to download the Sat file from the stb to pc. Use CM "Tools/Read from STB" and VS Ultra "Menu/System Information/Receiver Upgrade" to get the Sat file to CM. Be sure the check box for Ultra is checked in the CM read procedure. Save this as a new file say NewList.cmproj.

5/ In this Sat file DELETE yes DELETE the birds you USE. On all remaining Sats in the list, one at a time, double click and change Power to OFF. I also change lnb freqs to zero, lnb types to one you don't use, "State" to Hide and DiSEqC port to none. This is probably the most time comsuming step but once you do this you won't have to do it again.

6/ Now open up your channel list (you downloaded or previously made) and right click on the Sat you want in the left hand pane. Choose "copy" - this will copy the entire Sat setup including all channels. Go to your new list and right click on Satellites in the left pane, and choose paste. Do this for all birds you use.

7/ In your new list, go your first copied sat - probably at the bottom of the list - click and drag it to the correct spot in the list. Example 91 would go between 90.9 W and 93.0W, 110 would go between 107.3 W and 113 W, 119 btween 116.8 W and 121.0 W. This step is important as the Ultra seems to accept settings in the sat file, but not the file itself and this will ensure correct settings.

8/ Check each sat you use in the list (double click) for all settings you normally have in antenna settings on your receiver. Also be sure "State" is on "Select"and "Power" is "AUTO". Lnb type, lnb freq 1 & 2, DisEqC type and Port should be set according to your settings. Save the file to be sure you don't lose your work.

9/ Go to your receiver and delete all Sats you use - Menu/installation/channel scan click down twice and right 4 times to the little garbage can (delete satellite will show) - do this for each sat you use and that should clear all channels including radio.

10/ Now upload the sat and channel file using CM Tools/Write to STB and normal file loading procedures for Ultra. Be sure Ultra is checked in the CM write procedure.

11/ You now should have receiver working, all channels working, but the guide will show "no info". Check each sat you use to be sure the antenna settings are correct for lnb, diseqc etc.

12/ Now scan each sat you use seperatly using Menu/Installation/Auto Scan - check one of them, scan, save, check the next scan, save, etc.

13/ Check the guide and you now should have info. Go to Channel Organization/Edit Channels and sort by A-Z. this will put all the channels you don't want together under "z". Delete all those channels one by one - you can go quick and delete them in a minute or 2. Also check for doubles by SID number and either update your list in CM with the new Audio Video and transponder or see if your original channel works fine (if it does, delete the double). You likely will get some doubles unless you use a very new list to start.

14/ Go to the channel you use to populate guide, say A&E for 91 and CNN for 110/119 for a few minutes and watch TV!

NOTES:

If the list doesn't work for any reason, recheck all the steps and settings and go into antenna settings to check each unused Sat - make sure they are all turned off - if any are on turn lnb power off and save each one as you change it. If it still doesn't work skip back to step #9 and do a factory reset, reload bins and try again with your list list.

If you want to use this list on a Plat or Xtreme, save the sat and channel file in CM using File/Export/Viewsat CHA Format (be sure VS2000/Platinum/Xtreme is checked in the save procedure) and load into receiver using loader2. I also delete all unused Sats in CM list before saving for Plat or Xtreme as they may cause problems in those receivers.

Once you have a working list you can edit it as you like, add channels to favorites, add missing channels etc and write back to STB - once it's working I like to stay away from antenna settings on the receiver, the sat file is touchy for any changes and you may lose EPG.

This guide should work with any version of Sat file that Viewsat may install in their bins in the future. If not I will edit the guide for any changes.
